MARQUETTE - Marquette Alternative High School students have raised more than $1,100 to help a Marquette Senior High School alumnus pay for the care her young son's needs.

A total of $1,154.70 was donated to Tara Steinhorst, whose 4-year-old son, Colton, has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a cancer that is most commonly found in and around the adrenal glands in children age 5 and under, according to the Mayo Clinic's website.

MAHS English teacher Cindy DePetro said the students collected cans and bottles from Marquette City residents May 24 and also sold Venezuelan necklaces donated by MAPS food service employee Nikki Richardson.

DePetro said between the necklace sales, cash donations and the collection of more than 6,000 returnables, students were able to donate the money to the Steinhorst family.

"It is our wish to pay it forward since we feel blessed to be supported and loved by our community," DePetro said in a press release. "We hope this brings some relief, joy and support to the entire family."

DePetro said Colton, who was diagnosed with the cancer at the age of 2, recently underwent a bone marrow transplant and suffered serious complications. He and his mother were flown to a hospital in Denver, Colo., for care and have been there for almost two months.

The fundraiser was spearheaded by MAHS students Jake Roemer, Sophia Novak and TJ Harry, according to DePetro.
