MHSAA softball: Marquette, Negaunee fall in district finals

By Journal Sports Staff (sports@miningjournal.net) , The Mining Journal

ALPENA - After watching ace Morgan Seibert strike out 14 batters in an MHSAA Division 1 district semifinal earlier in the day, the Marquette Senior High School softball team got a taste of its own medicine in the district championship.

Alpena's Alex Peters fanned 15 Redettes on her home field, then scored the winning run for a 3-2 victory over MSHS in nine innings.

Peters walked five Redettes, gave up six hits and two runs in nine innings, but her biggest contribution may have been the two-out double she recorded at the plate in the top of the ninth inning. She was then driven in by Brennea Bourdage's RBI single.

"It was kind of one of those games where the team that came up with the big hit at the right time won," MSHS coach Paul Seibert said. "Alpena had the two best hitters and they came through in the clutch.

"I feel bad for the team. They worked so hard and came up just a bit short."

Morgan Seibert pitched eight innings against Alpena, giving up three walks, six hits and two runs. She struck out five batters and was handed the loss.
