KINGSFORD - Kingsford was nearly impenetrable but Marquette was still able to pull out a runner-up finish at the Great Northern Conference boys high school tennis meet held in Kingsford on Thursday.
The Flivvers won seven of the eight flights, with Escanaba pulling out victory at No. 1 doubles. Just five days earlier, Kingsford won a majority of the flights to capture the team title at the eight-team Negaunee Invitational.
While the Flivvers had a near-perfect 38 points on Thursday, Marquette was second with 23 points, just ahead of third-place West Iron County's 21 and fourth-place Menominee's 18. Escanaba had 13 points and Gladstone 6.

The Redmen reached the championship match at three flights, the toughest opposition in the finals provided by No. 3 singles player Noah Gannon, who lost to Kingsford's Daniel Harrington, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).
Marquette's Kyle King and Alex Shahbazi lost the title in No. 1 doubles to Dave Fix and Jake Eastin of Escanaba, 6-1, 6-3; while the Redmen's Matt Collins and Mike Edwards fell at No. 2 doubles to the Flivvers' Sean Ryan and Ted Pietila, 6-1, 6-4.
MSHS also picked up two third-place finishes by No. 1 singles player Josh Downs and No. 2 singles Justin Flood.
