Prep baseball roundup: Marquette falls to Escanaba, Negaunee sweeps Superior Central

MARQUETTE - Unable to score early, the Marquette Senior High School baseball team dropped an 11-2 decision to visiting Escanaba on Wednesday at Haley Memorial Field.

"Escanaba's a very good team," MSHS manager Todd Koski said, "but we had a few runners on base early and didn't capitalize.

"We left the bases loaded in the first inning."

Devin Olsen paced the Eskymos, who led 8-0 after four innings, with two hits and two RBI.

Jake Olson also recorded two safeties for the Redmen (0-9) and plated two runs.

Alec Slaga went all seven innings on the mound for Escanaba. He allowed six hits and three walks while striking out eight.

Jack Kochevar shouldered the loss. In five innings, he gave up 10 runs on nine hits and five walks while fanning four.

Negaunee sweeps

Superior Central

At Eben on Wednesday, Negaunee High School beat host Superior Central twice, 12-4 and 10-0.

Tyler LaJoie recorded three hits in the opener to lead the Miners. Teammates Owen LaJoie, Zane Radloff and Hunter Ridley added two apiece as Negaunee rallied from a 4-2 deficit with five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Dustin Goupille took the mound win. In five innings, he allowed five hits and three walks while striking out six.

Avery Nauchtman took the loss. He allowed eight runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings of work, walking one and fanning one.

Cody Maki had two hits for the Cougars.

In the second game, Dillon Tasson tossed a complete game three-hitter for the Miners. He didn't walk a batter and whiffed five.

Maki shouldered the loss, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk in three innings of work. He struck out four.

Tyler Jandron and Eric Wideman stroked three hits each for Negaunee, while Tyler LaJoie and Goupille added two apiece.

Matt Maki had two hits for the Cougars (1-5).

"It was our first games at home this season," SC manager Bill Maki said. "We got ahead in the first game, but we're not real deep in pitching and it showed.

"Tasson pitched a good game in the second. We couldn't string together any hits and he had some good defense behind him."
