ISHPEMING - Ashley Veale says she's not yet at her peak performance level this prep track season.

"I could be in better shape," the Negaunee High School senior said Tuesday.

That will no doubt be chilling news for her opponents as she won four individual events at the WIN Meet held at Westwood High School.

Veale's performance, combined with that of teammate Wyleen Kniola, powered the Miners of head coach Vickie Paupore to 117.5 points. That overwhelmed runner-up Westwood (37.5) and Ishpeming (27) for Negaunee's second straight WIN title.

Veale captured the 100-meter (16.1 seconds) and 300 low (48.83) hurdles, as well as the 100 (13.14) and 200 (28.07) dashes.

"They weren't my best times, but I feel good," she said. "It's a good meet to test myself and my boundaries.

"I'm doing well in the 100 hurdles. I'm hitting some times like I did last season."

Paupore said Veale had "a great day.

"She had some great times for this early in the year. She just works so hard."

Kniola took the 1,600 (6:01) and 3,200 (13:20.03) runs, as well as running a leg of Negaunee's winning 3,200 relay unit.

"It's hard for a distance runner to run three events, especially on a warm day like today," Paupore said.

Kniola said she "didn't start fast" in the 1,600.

"But I really sprinted at the end to stay in front of (Westwood runner Katie Etelamaki)," she said. "It pushes me more (to have someone near me) because I don't want anyone passing me."

In all, the Miners took 16 of the 17 events, with Westwood's Shelby Kellan spoiling Negaunee's perfect day with a win in the shot put (28 feet, 10 inches).

"I was impressed with a lot of performances today," Paupore said. "It was a team effort and we talk in practice about doing that every time out."

Ishpeming head coach Scott Syrjala said his girls "did OK."

"Alesha O'Brien is out with a small injury and we lost four firsts when we lost Kara Dale (to graduation) last season.

"But Jessica Spencer did OK (with a second in the 300 low hurdles and a third in the 100 hurdles)," he added.
