Prep baseball: Negaunee takes advantage of nine Marquette errors to sweep doubleheader

MARQUETTE - Plagued by errors both games, the Marquette Senior High School baseball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting Negaunee on Monday, 10-5 and 5-4, in a pair of six-inning contests.

"We shot ourselves in the foot," MSHS manager Todd Koski said, noting his team made nine errors on the day. "Every run we gave up was unearned."

The Miners of manager Mark Hill took a 3-0 first inning lead in the opening game and were never headed.

Luke Hill went 2-for-4, scored twice and knocked in two runs to pace Negaunee offensively. Teammate Tyler LaJoie scored three times.

For Marquette, Brendan Higbie knocked in three runs with a third inning double.

Jay Lori took the mound win, allowing four hits, four runs and five walks while striking out one in four innings of work.

Jay Oberg took the loss. He gave up all 10 runs, six hits and four walks while fanning one.

In the second game, Negaunee held a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, where Marquette (0-8) scored three times to make it close.

"We had the tying run at first, but didn't score again," Koski said. "We battled all the way, but just didn't get it done."

Tyler Jandron scored twice and knocked in a run for Negaunee. Teammate Tyler LaJoie crossed the plate twice.

Jake Olson went 2-for-3 for the Redmen, scored twice and plated a run.

Winning pitcher Joe Dishaw went the distance for Negaunee, giving up seven hits and two walks. He struck out one.

Dustin Goupille picked up a save.

Brandon Lotterman shouldered the loss after allowing four hits and no walks while fanning three.
