MSHS Athletes of the Month honored

MARQUETTE - Male and female Athletes of the Month for March at Marquette Senior High School have been named.

Curt Calovecchi and Kaitlin Beckstrom have earned the honor as selected by the Superiorland Kiwanis Club of Marquette.

Calovecchi, a senior member of the MSHS wrestling team, qualified for the MHSAA State Tournament at The Palace in Auburn Hills.

A two year captain for the Redmen, Calovecchi placed second in his weight class at The Challenge and Upper Peninsula Championships; earned a Great Northern Conference title for the third year in a row; and won the Northern Michigan Championship and Mariucci Invite, in addition to a district championship which qualified him for the MHSAA regionals.

Sporting a 3.8 GPA, Calovecchi is a member of the MSHS National Honor Society and has been on the school honor roll since he was a freshmen.

He volunteers for youth wrestling events, including the annual Marquette Youth Tournament.

In addition to wrestling, Calovecchi played football for three years at MSHS and enjoys fishing, running and going to camp.

He would like to wrestle in college and possibly study science or engineering.

He is the son of Ronald and Sharon Calovecchi.

Beckstrom, a senior on the MSHS swim and dive team this past season, is a four-year member of the squad.

She has been named to the All U.P. Swim Team for four years, as well as the All-Academic Team all four years.

Beckstrom is the current U.P. champion in the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

In the classroom, she has earned Honor Roll status every semester of her high school career and has a 4.194 GPA.

Beckstrom has been a member of the U.P. Community Rowing Club, and enjoys hiking and reading.

She volunteers as a timer at the Teal Lake Swim and many YMCA swim meets.

Beckstrom plans to major in biomedical engineering and pre-med at ether the University of Michigan or Michigan Tech this fall.

She would also like to study abroad in a Spanish speaking country.

She's the daughter of the late Mike Beckstrom, Sue Beckstrom-Noel and Curt Noel.

The Superiorland Kiwanis Club also announced May 2 a female athlete of the month for December.

Whitney Stilwell is a four-year alpine skier at MSHS who completed her senior season as a member of the All-UP First Team and All-State First Team.

A dedicated skier, she has attended the Junior Olympics. Stilwell has earned the team Leadership Award, Most Improved Skier Award and the Rumney Memorial Award.

Stilwell enjoys reading and baking, hanging out with friends and working out.

She has also played soccer and volleyball at MSHS.

She has volunteered to help at parent- teacher conferences, schedule pick up days, vacation bible school and at a mission site for Hurricane Katrina survivors.

Stilwell has also served at the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter and planted flowers during the Marquette Petunia Pandemonium.

She has a 3.76 GPA and plans to attend Michigan State University this fall to major in communications.

Stilwell is the daughter of Kelly and Jack Stilwell.
