To the Journal editor:
I would like to address the issue of whether wildlife in the state of Michigan should be managed using the best available biology or through outside special interest groups using inflammatory rhetoric to get an issue on the ballot and appealing to people's emotions.
My good friend Jackie (Winkowski) said a few days ago that SB 288 and HB 4552 will take the will of the people out of our management of wildlife here in Michigan.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In actuality, they will ensure that the voice of the people, as voiced in an overwhelming support in 1996 of Proposal G which mandated that the Natural Resources Commission use sound science in its game management decisions is followed.
It is the intent of the likes of HSUS to take biology out of the management decision making and use emotions instead through the use of a ballot initiative or popularity contest.
Wildlife should not be managed by what is popular or romantic rather by what is biologically sound.
The purpose of Prop G, as well as SB 288 and HB 4552 is to insure that Michigan's wildlife will continue to be managed through biology and not emotion.
