ESCANABA - Izaak Mahoski and Mike Mannisto prevailed in three sets at No. 2 doubles to help Munising pull out a 4-4 high school boys tennis tie against Escanaba on Thursday afternoon.
Like all matches for the Mustangs, this one was on the road in Escanaba, since Munising (0-1-1) doesn't have enough courts to host any meets.
Mahoski and Mannisto won the first set 7-6 over the Eskymos' Jared Bizeau and Dom Aos after taking the tiebreaker 7-4, lost the second set 6-3 before coming through in the final set 6-4.
"This was their first varsity win," Munising coach Rod Gendron said. "They're just competitors. They scrap and don't always make a pretty match out of it, but they'll fight to the end."
Gendron was also pleased with No. 1 singles player Noah Ackerman, who drubbed Esky's John Brant, 6-1, 6-2.
The Mustangs' other two wins came in doubles by No. 3 Ryan Walther and Joe Brogan and No. 4 Ian McGinnis and Trevor Witty.
"We're absolutely playing at a high level right now, and we'll only get better once we get our full squad set," Gendron said.
Munising's next scheduled match is at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Gwinn.
