Principles needed

April 11, 2013
The Mining Journal

To the Journal editor:

With all the rhetoric regarding restricting or eliminating our right to bear arms, the latest argument that restricts only certain types of weapons seems to be gaining ground.

The tragedy of any senseless killing, especially the killing of children, cannot be eliminated by restricting certain forms of weapons.

The fact is, a deranged person who is determined to take innocent lives, will find some way of accomplishing that. The weapon is an inanimate object that can do no harm or good until used by a human being.

Our Second Amendment right was put in place for a reason and the type of arms available has nothing to do with it. Our Constitution is a well thought out document that has stood the test of time and is not meant to be adjusted; it is not a living document.

A main purpose of the Second Amendment is to allow citizens to be armed so the U.S. can be protected from enemies both foreign and domestic, including the government itself.

How many years ago did Thomas Jefferson say, "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

If any bans are put in place, the law abiding citizen will be at a disadvantage as criminals will pay no attention to the law. What is more important is another of our freedoms will be diminished.

Restricting our right to bear arms is putting a band-aid on a cancer. The disease of constantly turning our backs on God and the Christian fundamentals we were founded on is spreading in favor of "political correctness." We need to reestablish a respect for life.

To view all people as created by God and not just the evolvement of a glob of primordial ooze would help bring back the value of every human life and trickle down to everything from TV and movies to video games to abortion clinics to using a firearm for the provision of hunting and the protection of our loved ones and home.

Think of the harm done by a knee jerk response to the recent shooting horrors in light of our future freedom. Let us return to our founding principles.
