Help is needed

March 24, 2013
Joel, Ramona Arthur, captains - Marquette , The Mining Journal

To the Journal editor:

The economic downturn that has rocked our nation continues to have an effect on our community. The results of these difficult times are acutely felt by those who seek assistance from organizations like the Salvation Army.

In the first quarter of this year alone, the Salvation Army saw a 38 percent increase in requests for services from our Food Pantry and the Daily Bread Lunch program.

The increases in requests for services have pressed our organization to its very limits. We simply cannot keep pace with the volume of requests from families in crisis.

We are writing this letter to the community because The Salvation Army in Marquette is desperately in need of partners to come along side to aid in meeting the growing need in our community. Partners who can help us provide hope for those who come to us. There is an unprecedented urgency to meet the challenges that we face.

Now is the time to take action, now is the time to invest in the continued programming of The Salvation Army as we do not want to refuse assistance to the truly needy.

The community has been very generous during our Christmas campaign; however, these funds will not sustain us throughout the entire year owing to the increased demand on services. The combination of increased needs and the elimination of government funding have created the perfect storm in terms of social services.

Our thrift store sales, in addition to contributions, provides some funds for these programs, but cannot offer all the funds necessary to provide for these large increases. This is why we need the help of the community!

We are well aware that it is a tough economic time for many people, but donations are needed! We need monetary contributions, canned food items and fresh food items.

The Salvation Army will continue to provide not only high quality services but hope to our community. Feel free to call us if you have any questions at (920) 226-2241.

Thank you for your response. Please send the best gift you can to the Salvation Army at 1009 W. Baraga St., Marquette, MI. God Bless You!
