ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming City Council is scheduled to discuss the resignation of Councilman Dave Williams at its meeting tonight.

Williams was elected to the council in November and took his seat in December. In his letter of resignation, Williams expresses his regret and said he can no longer continue to be an effective member of the council due to health reasons.

"I've contracted an (illness) that would prevent me from completing my duties as a council member," Williams said. "It was a tough decision. I want to do what I can to help the city and I think that I could have made a difference, but I start chemo soon and from what I've heard, it wreaks havoc on the body and mind.

"I don't believe I can continue to give my full attention to the duties that are required of me as a council member, so I decided to step aside and allow someone else to to step up and make a difference. I've enjoyed my time on the council and I have nothing but respect for them and the mayor. I think they're on the right track to do good for this city and I regret that I can't be apart of it."

If approved by the council, Williams will officially step down as a city council member May 1. After that, the city council will appoint a replacement by a majority vote, Ishpeming City Manager Jered Ottenwess said.

To replace a vacant seat on the council due to the resignation, the council must set a deadline for qualified individuals that are interested to file a nominating petition and file a sworn affidavit of identity with the city clerk. Candidates must be a resident of and registered to vote in the city of Ishpeming.

"We are starting the process (tonight) so there hopefully won't be much of a gap between Williams stepping down and a new member being appointed," Ottenwess said.

Whether there will be an interview process with the candidates will be at the discretion of the council, he said.

"It depends on the number of applicants," Ottenwess said. "If there is only one applicant then there obviously would be no reason to do interviews, but if there is a lot of applicants they may want to do an interview process. I'm sure that will be part of the discussion at the meeting."

The council meets at 7 p.m. at the Ishpeming Senior Citizens Center.
