SAULT STE. MARIE - They split in head-to-head action during the season, but the Negaunee High School basketball Miners have claimed the No. 1 Class ABC ranking over the Marquette Senior High School Redmen.

NHS (19-1), whose only loss came to MSHS, 59-43, on Dec. 13, picked up all five top votes by a select group of five voters from the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

That gave coach Mike O'Donnell's Miners - who beat MSHS 55-35 on Feb. 14 - 25 points to 19 for coach Brad Nelson's Redmen (16-3) in the final poll of the season.

In Class D, Cedarville (19-1) was a unanimous pick at No. 1 with 25 points.

Coach Dan Waterman's Munising Mustangs (16-4) collected three points for an honorable mention spot.

In the final Associated Press statewide poll for Class C boys, Negaunee finished at No. 3 behind Flint's Hamady and Beecher.

In the AP Class D poll, Munising and Superior Central both received votes, but are unranked.
