MARQUETTE - With girls basketball moving to district tournament play this week, there was no movement this week in the final girls polls of the season released today by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
Marquette (17-3) continues to hold the top spot in Class ABC, and Negaunee (15-5) remains third. In Class D, Superior Central completed a perfect 20-0 regular season but still sits second behind unanimous No. 1 St. Ignace, also at 20-0.
On the boys side, Negaunee (18-1) remained on top and Marquette (15-2) second in the Class ABC ratings. Gwinn (14-5) took over fourth alone after sharing the spot last week with Iron Mountain, which was bumped from the top five by Kingsford.
The most movement came in Class D, where Cedarville remained No. 1 North Central No. 3 and Brimley No. 4. But Carney-Nadeau and Ewen-Trout Creek switched places, with C-N now second and E-TC fifth. Munising also received two votes, not enough to break the top five.
In the state Associated Press polls also released today, the Negaunee boys moved up three spots to third behind a pair of Flint teams, Beecher and Hamady, while the Superior Central girls stayed at No. 2 behind top-ranked St. Ignace.
In addition, the Munising boys received votes in Class D and are in effect in 16th.
