Rochester, Mitchell lead MSHS gymnastics

MARQUETTE - Avery Rochester won two individual events and teammate Mikayla Mitchell another as Marquette easily outscored Negaunee and Escanaba at a three-team high school gymnastics meet held at the MSHS gym on Thursday.

The Redettes scored 127.2 points, nearly 10 points ahead of the Eskymos' 117.45 as the Miners came in third with 115.55.

Rochester won the balance beam with 9.25 and vault with 8.5 to total 33.55 in the four events and beat out runner-up Erin Mattson of Escanaba by six-tenths of a point in the all-around.

Also in the all-around, Mitchell was third with 31.55, teammate Rachel Snow fourth (29.75) and Jarynn Stewart fifth (27.25).

Rochester was second in the uneven bars (7.55) and tied for fourth in the floor exercise (8.25).

Mitchell won the floor with 8.40 with her next-best finish fourth in the beam (7.85). Mattson won the meet's other apparatus, the bars, with 7.90.

Marquette's Dinele Stewart was second in the beam (8.45) and third on bars (7.30) and tied for third in vault (8.25), while teammate Sarah Fosco was third in floor (8.3).

Negaunee teammates Kate Malicka and Katie Torreano tied for fourth in the floor (8.25), Torreano was fifth in vault (8.20) and Kate Rasmussen fifth on the beam (7.70).
