MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan University goaltender Jared Coreau believes he pulls of the color pink quite well, but that's not why he's been using his Twitter account this week (@Rozi3B1rd) to promote the Pink Wave on Saturday at the Berry Events Center.

For Coreau, the athletic department's fundraiser to benefit the Cancer Center of Marquette County is personal.

"My mother and aunt are both breast cancer survivors so that's what drove me to get it started," Coreau said.

"It's huge for me and huge for my family. Unfortunately they can't make it this weekend. It's pretty much for them."

Saturday's NMU Pink Wave will feature a triple-header against Ferris State at the Berry Events Center, starting with a men's basketball game at 11 a.m., a women's basketball game to follow at 1 p.m. and Game 2 of a CCHA hockey series at 7:35 p.m.

Northern is selling pink apparel for the games and encouraging all fans to wear pink to the BEC on Saturday to support breast cancer awareness.

"Our lives become so consumed with hockey and how busy we are being student athletes," NMU senior Kory Kaunisto said. "It's things like this that make you take a step back and be thankful for what you've got, but also just realize there are other, bigger, more important things going on."

T-shirts are $10, crew-neck sweatshirts are $15, hooded sweatshirts at $20 and polos are $40 with all net proceeds going to the Cancer Center of Marquette. Apparel can be purchased at the NMU Bookstore, the Superior Dome or on game day at the BEC.

NMU head hockey coach Walt Kyle is a cancer survivor himself. He said community events like these are what helped him defeat the disease not once, but twice.

"I went through (cancer) a couple times in my life," Kyle said. "I know how important my family, friends and the community were in helping me get through both times when I had it. I think one of the remarkable things about Marquette is how we take care of each other. I think this is a great thing."
