MARQUETTE, Mich. - Gladys Helen Unmuth, age 90, of 66 Stonegate, Sands Township, entered eternal life Tuesday morning, February 5, 2013, at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Born July 11, 1922 in Iron River, a daughter of Gustave and Magda (Noren) Strom, Gladys was raised in Iron River and graduated from high school there in 1940. In 1941, Gladys married Jack Unmuth, Sr., and together the couple established a home and raised their three children in Stambaugh. In 1966, she enrolled in the nursing program at Bay De Noc Community College (now Bay College) in Escanaba, receiving certification as a licensed practical nurse. She moved to Marquette in 1969 where she was employed in nursing at St. Luke's Hospital, later with Marquette General Hospital, and then at the Marquette Branch Prison for ten years. She retired in 1987. Gladys' family was her life and she greatly enjoyed camping with her children and grandchildren.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, Diane (James) Hyer of Skandia; son, Blaise (Becky) Unmuth of Marquette; her grandchildren, Kelly, Kim, Erik, Jennifer, and Sherry; great-grandchildren, Josh, Stosh, Samantha, Kristy, Carlee, Harrison, Kelsey, Shannon, and Hannah; and feline companion, Princess. In addition to her parents and husband, Jack Unmuth, Sr., Gladys was preceded in death by a son, Jack Unmuth, Jr and wife, Barb; grandson, Jeffrey Mark Unmuth; a sister and six brothers.
