EBEN - The Superior Central boys basketball team fired the first salvo in the battle for Alger County supremacy at their home gym on Friday night, moving into a tie for first place in their league in the process.
The Cougars held off Munising, 45-37, to improve to 5-1 in the Central Upper Peninsula League
"This was a very physical game," SC coach Herb Jenkins said.
The Cougars (9-4 overall) led 6-2 after one period, bumping it to 20-12 by halftime.
SC's Trevor Maki led all scorers with 17 points, making a pair of 3-pointers, while teammate Matt Verbrigghe added 11 and a team-high six rebounds.
For Munising (8-3), Ben Stasewich scored 14 points and Gage Webster had 10.
Manistique 40, Westwood 38
The Manistique boys withstood some scary moments in the end Friday night as they escaped with a 40-38 prep basketball triumph over the winless Westwood Patriots.
Westwood missed a free throw with 15 seconds left and a putback rimmed out for the Patriots at the final buzzer of the Mid-Peninsula Conference match-up.
Max Nelson and Coby Ryan scored 12 points eachEmeralds (4-9 overall, 2-8 M-PC).
The Emeralds hit 18-of-46 field goals and committed just eight turnovers.
Justin Luke scored nine points for Westwood (0-10 l, 0-4), which won the jayvee contest 49-36.
