PERKINS - Vanessa Freberg led the Superior Central girls basketball team to a flawless 13-0 on the season Monday night by defeating the Mid Peninsula Wolverines 57-32.
Freberg also broke Jennifer Verbrigghe's career scoring record of 852 points in the process. However, Freberg came into the game the same way she would any other - playing with a team-first mentality. Records are more of an afterthought, she said.
"I had an idea that I was close, but I wasn't sure how close," she said. "I just want our whole team to be good."
Freberg needed 14 points coming into Monday night's game to break the record. She racked up 12 points in the first half, so all she needed was one bucket in the second half to break it.
She found the ball in her hands during one of the first plays in the third quarter, and she was underneath the basket. But rather than pull up and shoot, she found an open teammate who hit a jump shot.
"That's how she is. She's unselfish," said Cougars coach Greg Trowbridge. "She makes things happen for my guards. When we're pressing, she gets the steals. She does a very good job."
Although the record is a big deal for the team and the school, Trowbridge didn't seem overly surprised that Freberg was able to accomplish it.
"She's a pretty special ball player," he said. "She's been a hard worker since I got her in the gym around eighth grade. You could see what she was going to accomplish. Her work ethic, what she's willing to do."
Just a few minutes into the third quarter, Freberg was fouled on a shot and went to the line. She would make both of her free throws, and become an all-time scoring leader in the process.
Teslyn Tyner, one of Freberg's teammates, got a huge smile on her face and came over to give her a high-five as the achievement was announced to the crowd.
"I'm just really proud of her," Tyner said. "I'm glad to be her friend."
In regards to breaking the record, Freberg still thought about her team.
"It feels good," Freberg said. "It hasn't really clicked yet, I but it makes me feel productive."
Freberg finished with a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with her 14 points.
The Cougars began the game with a 10-0 run, and maintained a comfortable advantage for the entire contest.
