ALPENA, Mich. - Christopher Robert Marchand, 45, of Alpena, Mich., lost his courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) January 17, 2013, surrounded by his loving family and special friend, Sandy Sutton. ALS ravaged his body but never his spirit. He was a "Warrior" until the end.

Christopher was born November 11, 1967, in Plainfield, New Jersey to Robert and Kathleen (McGrath) Marchand. He moved to White Pine, Mich., with his parents, sister and grandparents in 1972. He graduated from White Pine High School in 1986. He received his Associate degree in communications from Ferris State University and B.A. in Journalism from Northern Michigan University.

Christopher started his career as a sports writer in college working for Sports Information at Ferris and NMU and writing for the Marquette Mining Journal. He went on to become the Sports Editor at the Sault Evening News, sports writer at the Mount Pleasant Morning Sun and ended his career because of his health at the Midland Daily News. He covered every sport possible and knew everything there is to know about sports or made it up. He was voted "best sports writer" in the Tri-cities area by newspaper subscribers.

Visitation for family and close friends will take place on Sunday, January 20, 2013, from 1:30 to 2:30 PM with a memorial service at 2:30 PM at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Alpena. Father Jim Kendziorski will officiate. Interment will be in the spring in Marquette, MI, next to his grandmother. A celebration of Christopher's life will take place at the end of July on "Warrior Weekend" in White Pine. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude's Church in White Pine, MI.

The memory of Christopher's smile will be a continued inspiration to all those who were blessed to receive it.
