ALLENDALE - After a quick early score, the Northern Michigan University women's basketball team was forced to play catch-up all night and lost 58-48 at Grand Valley State on Thursday night in GLIAC play.

Freshman guard Anna Liewen hit a jump shot and a layup in the first 2 minutes to give Northern 2-0 and 4-2 leads, but those would be their last as the Wildcats fell to 8-5 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC.

GVSU (10-3, 6-3) built its lead up to 10 points in the first half and was ahead 30-25 at halftime, going up by as many as 15 points down the stretch, 54-39 with 4:56 to go.

Liewen and sophomore guard Alyssa Colla each scored a team-high 12 points for Northern, while sophomore teammate Lauren Gruber added 11 to go with seven rebounds.

The Wildcats shot 41 percent from the field (18 of 44) and hit at a 63 percent clip (10 of 16) on free throws.

GVSU's Briauna Taylor led all scorers with 24 points.

The Wildcats finish this week's road trip at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Ferris State, which lost to Michigan Tech 60-46 on Thursday.
