MARQUETTE, Mich. - Irene Lucille (Nelson) James, age 89, passed away peacefully into the arms of our Lord and Savior on January 8, 2013.
She was born on March 14, 1923, the eldest child of Nels and Lena (Olsen) Nelson of National Mine. Irene graduated as Valedictorian of her class from National Mine High School in 1941. She worked from 1975 to 1985 in Medical Records at Marquette General Hospital. Irene was known for her baking and doll collection by family & friends. In her youth, she enjoyed skiing, ice skating, and sewing. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Ishpeming.
Irene is survived by her husband, Robert James; her sons, Daryl (Carole) and Mark (Julia) James; five grandchildren, Michael O'Connell, Rev. Dr. Christopher (Karen) James, Andrew (Jennifer) James, Erik James, and Danielle James; five great-grandchildren, Kayleigh James, Masie James, Lily James, Logan James, and Olivia James; and five of her brothers and sisters, June (Nelson) Saari, Barbara (Nelson) Behm, Virginia (Nelson) Shepard, Dudley Nelson, and Bruce Nelson. She was preceded in death by her son, Dr. Roger James; her sister, Bernice (Nelson) James; and her brother, Jack Nelson.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, January 12, 2013, with her grandson, Rev. Dr. Christopher James officiating. Interment will be made in the Northland Chapel Gardens. A reception will be held at the Good News Assembly of God in Ishpeming following services.
