ISHPEMING - The Greater Ishpeming-Negaunee Chamber of Commerce is holding its first ever Arctic Blast Color Dash Saturday.
The Arctic Blast Color Dash is an untimed 5K snowshoe run in which after each kilometer, the snowshoer will be blasted with a colored powder, GINCC Executive Director Elizabeth Peterson said. Each participant will be given a long sleeve white shirt that will be full of color by the end of the run.
"Color runs are very popular around the country," Peterson said. "So we thought winter would be a great time to do this with all the white snow, and it's a way for people to get out and be active in the winter."
There is also a 1K run for children 12 years old and younger. Participants can either run or walk the course with snowshoes or boots. "It's going to be a fun event and there will be bonfires, hot chocolate and cookies available," Peterson said.
The dash begins and ends at the Country Village RV Park and will take runners through Ishpeming Hills. Packets can be picked up at the GINCC until 6 p.m. today or at the Country Village RV Park on Saturday.
The colored powder is 100 percent natural and safe. It mostly washes out but it is suggested that participants wear items that they wouldn't mind getting colorful.
"People seem to be really excited for this event," Peterson said. "Our goal was 150 participants and we currently have about 225 signed up so far."
Race day registration costs $40 for the 5K and $20 for the 1K. The kids' 1K starts at 10 a.m. and the 5K starts at 11 a.m.
