MARQUETTE - A 53-year-old Marquette man is dead after being struck by a vehicle Sunday at the intersection of Grove Street and U.S. Highway 41.
According to the Marquette City Police Department, the man was attempting to cross the highway at approximately 8:16 p.m. when he was hit by a westbound vehicle driven by a 35-year-old Chocolay Township man.
The Marquette man died as a result of his injuries. Police are not releasing the names of either men at this time.
The Marquette police were assisted on scene by the Marquette City Fire Department, Medi-Ride EMS, the Marquette County Sheriff's Office and the Marquette Public Works Department.
The accident remains under investigation.
The county has seen several traffic accidents resulting in the death of pedestrians this year, including one on the Fourth of July. Marquette resident Karin LaChappel was killed that evening and her husband Bryan was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle near the intersection of South Front and Genesee streets in Marquette as they walked to watch the city's fireworks display.
Linda Marie Vanginkel, 64, of National Mine was crossing Third Street in Ishpeming near the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame on July 18 when she was struck by a pick-up truck. Vanginkel was taken to Marquette General Hospital, where she died two days later.
In October, Donald A. Papin, 86, of Marquette, was crossing West Washington Street in Marquette in the area of the Burger King restaurant when he was struck by a Marquette resident who was on his way to work.
Charges were brought against the drivers allegedly involved in the deaths of LaChappel and Vanginkel.
No charges were brought against the driver involved in the death of Papin.
