MARQUETTE/HUMBOLDT TWP., MI. - Sulo B. Isotalo, age 91 of 2722 Scenic Dr. Marquette and longtime Humboldt Twp resident passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at the Omega House in Houghton where he has been a resident for most of the past 4 months.

Sulo was born March 15, 1921 in Humboldt Township to Gust & Hilma (Koski) Isotalo. He attended Champion High School where he excelled in basketball; receiving All-State honors his Junior and Senior years, graduating in 1940.

In September 1940 Sulo went to work for the Munising Wood Products Factory. On April 18, 1942 he married Elsie Laakso of Diorite; he went to serve his country in the U.S. Army in January 1943. He served basic training at Camp McCoy, WI; he was shipped to McCloskey General Hospital in Temple, TX as a medical technician from March 1943 until December 7, 1945. Following his honorable discharge he worked in the woods for various loggers and then for Robbins Flooring Mill in Ishpeming until 1951. He started his mining career with CCI in 1953, later working for North Range Mining Company in Champion until they closed in 1967. He resumed employment with CCI in April 1968. In 1973 he had a very serious work accident at the Republic Mine which forced him to retire.

Sulo enjoyed the outdoors: hunting and fishing were his favorite pastimes in his earlier years. He was active in local government, serving as Humboldt Township Clerk and Trustee for a total of 48 years. He was a member of the American Legion Lillian Larson Post #114 for 55 years and a member of the Evergreen Christian Church. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren at their sporting events and watching all sports on TV being an avid Detroit Tigers and Dallas Cowboy fan. He enjoyed an occasional ride to the casino where blackjack was his favorite game. He will be remembered for his very sharp memory.

Sulo is survived by his loving wife of over 70 years Elsie (Laakso) Isotalo of Marquette, five children: Dale (Cheryl) Isotalo of Milwaukee, Susan (Tony) Marta of Marquette, Sally Barbiere of Menasha, WI, Dennis (Cheryl) Isotalo of Ishpeming and Tami (Todd) Bessner of Hancock, 12 grandchildren, Douglas (Angie) Isotalo, Tony (Christy) Marta, Bradley (Rachel) Marta, Kari (Tom) Heikkila, Mark, Angela, Todd (Chanin) Barbiere, Laura (Brian) Thomas, Kelly (Jason) Cittadino, Nicole Bessner, Chelsea (Gust) Junttila and Travis Bessner, 17 great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Sulo was preceded in death by his parents, a son Douglas Lee, grandson Brock Barbiere, son in law Phil Barbiere, 3 sisters: Mary Harrington, Sylvia Turcott and Irene Korby, and 4 brothers: Jack, Charles, Matt and Robert.

A private memorial service will be held at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming with Rev. D. Michael Carriere officiating.

Sulo's family would like to express their gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Omega House for their care during this difficult time.

Memorial considerations may be directed to the Omega House 2211 Maureen Ln., Houghton, MI 49931 in memory of Sulo.
