Legion Bantams go 2-1-1 over weekend

MARQUETTE - A 3-0 win over Sault Ste. Marie Bantam AA gave the Marquette American Legion Bantam AA hockey team a 2-1-1 record the weekend of Dec. 7-9.

Legion goaltender Jack Eyler came up with 22 saves for the shutout.

Chris LeMire, Nick Bink and Donny Schultz scored for Marquette, with Branden Campbell and LeMire drawing assists.

Saturday against the Alpena Bantam AA squad, the Marquette icers (15-15-6 overall, 5-1-2 NIHL) forged a 2-2 tie behind a late third period goal by DenBeste.

Hunter Doucette also scored for Legion, with Bink, Justin Hendrickson and Schultz gaining helpers.

Travis Cameron made 19 stops in net for Marquette.

Earlier in the day, the Marquette squad beat Alpena, 2-0, as DenBeste and LeMire found the back of the net.

Collecting assists were Shane Ring, Alister Henderson and Kristian Jackson.

Eyler made 18 saves for the winners.

Dec. 7, Legion dropped a 3-0 decision to the Soo, though Cameron turned aside 17 shots on net.

"We outshot our opponents 150-80, but only outscored them 7-5 (on the weekend)," Legion head coach Brian Nebel said.

"We have to get hungrier around the net and ... bury those rebounds."

MSHS JV swept by

Traverse City

MARQUETTE - The Marquette Senior High School junior varsity hockey team hosted Traverse City Dec. 8-9 and lost both games, 5-3 and 3-2.

In the first game, Alex Warchol notched a three-goal hat trick for the Redmen.

Picking up assists were James Hendrickson, Cole Reiboldt, Lucas Klingler, Nick Tuma and Hunter Larson.

Johnny Beckman made 17 saves in net for MSHS.

"We played pretty well," Marquette head coach Kevin Thomsen said. "We ... ran into a hot goalie who really made some spectacular saves."

In the second contest, the Redmen took a 2-0 lead but couldn't hold on.

Tanner Carriere and Tony Fedrizzi scored for the Redmen, with assists going to Jacob Peterson, Zach Carter and Sam Leow.

Gabe Apple turned aside 17 shots on the MSHS goal.

"Anytime you outshoot your opponent 35-20, you expect not only to score more than two (goals), you expect to win the game," Thomsen said. "We just couldn't find a way to finish (T.C.) off."

Police Cadets Squirts

MARQUETTE - In Central Upper Peninsula league play, the Police Cadets Squirt B hockey team of Marquette went 2-0 during the Dec. 7-9 weekend.

The Cadets beat the Marquette Elks Club, 7-5. Goaltending for the Cadets was Zane Phillips and for the Elks, John Thompson.

Cadets goals were scored by Jack Burzynski (2), Tommy Blemberg (2), Austin Ridl (2), and Julian Greason.

Chase Bourdeau and Greason picked up assists.

Elks scorers were Natalie Bordson (2), Luke Lahtinen (2) and Sydney McCarthy.

The Cadets also topped Marquette Casa Calabria, 8-6. In goal for the Cadets was Zane Phillips; for Casa, Kyle Johnson.

Scoring for the Cadets were Greason (2), Blemberg, Bourdeau (4), and Ethan Richards.

Collecting helpers were Richards, Burzynski, Bourdeau, and Ridl.

Casa tallies were scored by Matthew Anderson (2), Skyler Deshone, Jacob Allard-Soucey and Beau Belkowski (2).
