MARQUETTE - Tickets will be available Monday morning for new bus tours of Marquette Christmas lighting displays, benefitting The Mining Journal Cheer Club and Salvation Army.

The roughly two-hour bus tours will showcase several of this year's winning lighting displays, awarded by the Marquette Board of Light and Power in its annual contest. The tours will take place at 7 p.m. on the evenings of Tuesday, Dec. 18 and Wednesday, Dec. 19.

"This is a first time attempt for a Christmas light tour and we are anxious to see what kind of response we get," said Mining Journal Publisher Jim Reevs. "If things go over well, we may expand the program next year."

A $10 gift or donation for a family of four or less is required for tour tickets, which will be available beginning at 8 a.m. Monday at the Marquette offices of The Mining Journal, located at 249 W. Washington St. For groups of more than four people, an additional donation is suggested.

Tickets will be limited on a first come first served basis. You need to bring in the contribution to the Cheer Club when you come in to pick up your tickets. All proceeds will benefit The Mining Journal Cheer Club, which directs its collections to the Salvation Army to help area families.

Four entities, including The Mining Journal, are partnering to make the tours available. Buses will leave from the Marquette Commons, located along South Third Street. Doors open at the Commons at 6 p.m. with cookies and refreshments served; buses load at 6:45 p.m. and leave promptly at 7 p.m. both nights.

"The Mining Journal is excited about joining with Checker Cab, the Marquette Downtown Development Authority and the Board of Light and Power to offer family oriented tours of the local Christmas lights in the Marquette area," Reevs said. "All the participating businesses are donating their services for the event in exchange for donations made to the Cheer Club to benefit the Salvation Army."

The Marquette Board of Light and Power will provide tour guides.
