NEGAUNEE - Marquette and host Negaunee had a tough time on the wrestling mat Thursday in season-opening play for both teams.

The Redmen dropped a 37-36 decision to Iron Mountain and fell 37-15 to Gladstone, while Negaunee lost 36-30 to I.M. and 75-6 to the Braves.

"We're a young team," first-year Negaunee coach Brad Saatio said. "I wrestled four freshmen, but it was a good experience for us to see new faces other than what we've seen in practice.

"We just have to work on some small things."

Brody Rosten posted Negaunee's lone pin, that coming at 130 pounds against Iron Mountain. Against Gladstone, he lost an 11-6 decision in his weight class.

"I was also impressed with Owen LaJoie (at 170)," Saatio said. "It was his first high school match and he showed he's not afraid to wrestle. He went out there with some confidence."

Marquette co-coach Tony Gentz lauded Redman senior Austin Johnson, who posted a 9-2 decision over a Gladstone wrestler.

Curt Calovecchi also posted an 18-7 decision against Gladstone at 171 pounds.

"Johnson was the only highlight of our night, other than Curt Calovecchi," Gentz said.

"I'm disappointed with the losses, but it was a good way to find out where we're at," added Gentz, who said all of his team's 36 points against I.M. came via forfeits by the Mountaineers.

I.M., which Saatio said didn't have anyone wrestle after 145 pounds, got falls from Alex Edward (125), Corbin Henkel (135), Jake Ferguson (140) and Tanner Chouinard (145) against Negaunee.
