MARQUETTE, Mich. - Norma A. Carey, 87, of Marquette, entered eternal life Friday, November 30, 2012, at Marquette General Hospital, in the loving care of her family.
Norma was born in Greenville, Pennsylvania, November 29, 1925, to Frank and Leora Ethel (Beckstein) Amy. Following high school, Norma attended Michigan State College, known today as Michigan State University, where she was a cheerleader on the first female cheerleading squad at the college. It was in the 1940s, during college, where she met her future husband, Lawrence Carey, and there were married soon after. The couple moved to St. Charles, Illinois, and it was there they established a home and began raising their two children. They remained married until Lawrence's death in 2002. Norma was an elementary teacher for the West Chicago Public School system for over 30 years, retiring in the 1990s. During her retirement, her winters were spent in Vero Beach, Florida, where she enjoyed many holes of golf. Her summers were spent in Gulliver, Michigan, where she was an active member of the Indian Lake Golf Club and the Gulliver Historical Society, spending many hours volunteering at the Suel Choix Lighthouse. Norma had great faith in the Lord, and was an active member of the Congregational Church in St. Charles, and more recently, an active member at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Marquette. At Redeemer, she was active in the church choir and also volunteered her time at numerous other church events. She was one of the founding members of the Young Mother's Club in St. Charles, something she was very proud of. Norma enjoyed a good game of contract bridge and was in several bridge clubs over the years. She had a deep love for her family and friends and will be greatly missed by many.
Norma is survived by her children, Catherine (Richard) Jansen of Coldwater, Mich., and Larry (Sharon) Carey, of Marquette; grandchildren, Jennifer, Jon, Erin Bethany, Kelley, Larry IV, and Katey; one great-granddaughter, Lila; several nieces and nephews, including Dan Johnson, Karen Amy and Susan (Robert) Lyons.
