ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming school board appointed a new member to the panel at a special meeting Monday.
The meeting was held to interview two candidates, Kelly Woods and Julie Perry, for the seat opened up by the coming departure of member David Leverton. Woods was appointed to the position by unanimous vote.
"Both were really good candidates and the board had a tough decision to make between the two of them," Superintendent Stephen Piereson said.

Woods is an assistant librarian at the Ishpeming Carnegie Library. She worked as a case manager for Voices for Youth, which dealt with at youths at risk, for a year and a half and was a foster parent for four years.
"There is a lot I need to learn about the school district and what's required of me as a board member," Woods said. "My one goal is to be a contributing board member and to benefit the kids and the schools."
Woods grew up in the area and graduated from Westwood High School. She received her bachelor's degree in religious studies and a master's degree in theological studies.
A motion was made by board member Paul Olson to nominate Woods to the position and it was seconded by Leverton.
"I think we had two very good candidates with a lot of experience," Leverton said.
Olson explained he nominated Woods because having a foster parent on the board would be helpful and give the board a different view on things.
Woods term begins Jan. 1 and goes through December 2014. Leverton's position was on the ballot for the November election, but no one ran for the seat so the board had to appoint someone.
