ISHPEMING - A switch in defense paid off for the Superior Central High School girls basketball team Monday night.
Coach Greg Trowbridge had his Cougars (2-0) go from a man-to-man to a zone after intermission and it helped SC take a 45-37 nonconference win over host Ishpeming.
"Defense was the difference," Trowbridge said. "Our zone pretty much shut them down in the second half.
"It was a little scary, though. Our offense just isn't clicking yet."
Teslyn Tyner paced the Cougars with 15 points, four assists and four steals. Teammate Vanessa Freberg added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
"They're pretty good," Ishpeming coach Mark Dellangelo said of the Cougars. "They took it to us for a couple of spurts and we weren't able to overcome a couple of possessions.
"They also broke our pressure."
Alesha O'Brien powered Ishpeming (1-1) with 13 points and seven boards. Kaylie Engler chipped in 10 points.
