NEGAUNEE - The Negaunee Public Schools Board of Education at its meeting tonight will appoint a member to an open seat on the board that wasn't filled during the November election.
Board Vide President Greg Toutant's position was supposed to be on the ballot this past election but wasn't due to a clerical mistake, said Superintendent James Derocher. Toutant was appointed to the board in 2011 when former board member Dan Hintsala, whose term ran until 2014, stepped down. According to Derocher, appointed positions are only until the next election and then the position goes on the ballot.
"Because it wasn't on the ballot nobody ran for the position, so it's considered open right now," Derocher said. "And when there's a position open like this the board has to appoint someone to the position. I expect that they'll just re-appoint Toutant."
The position will on the ballot in 2014. Board members do not have a limit on how many years or terms they can serve on the board.
Also on the agenda is the discussion of the Lakeview Elementary Croix Street Project. The board will be discussing bids for a company to design a new front access. Derocher said they are looking to expand the parking and increase the safety of the student drop-off and pick-up area.
The board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Negaunee High School Library.
