Rental home destroyed in Powell Township blaze

November 4, 2012

MARQUETTE - Powell Township Fire Department officials reported no injuries from a structure fire that burned a rental residence Friday in the Halfway area, north of Marquette.

The fire was reported shortly before 5 p.m. Friday and occurred at W1686 Marquette County Road KJ, a rental house owned by Tim Smith. Smith lives in an adjacent home.

A dozen Powell Township firefighters with three pumpers responded to the blaze, assisted by Powell Township EMS and the Marquette Township Fire Department, which provided water and air supplies.

Powell Township Firefighters found flames coming out of the roof of the rental home when they arrived. No one was inside the residence. Fire crews were able to confine the blaze to the rental home, which kept it from spreading to Smith's adjacent residence.

Fire officials said the fire appears to have started in the rear of the rental house, but the cause of the blaze had not been determined.

Fire crews stayed at the scene of the fire for about four hours. One Powell Township Fire Department official said the rental home was "pretty much a loss."
