MARQUETTE - Marquette's long volleyball trip downstate for MHSAA Class A district competition proved unfruitful Tuesday, while a much shorter trip was worth it for Munising in Class D on Monday.

TC Central 3, MSHS 0

At Gaylord, the Redettes were swept by Traverse City Central, 25-13, 25-14, 25-16.

MSHS sophomore hitter Hunter Viitala made eight kills and senior blocker Emily Boyle added six. In addition, Marquette senior setter Addison Piotrowski had 19 assists and senior hitter Liana Storm made 12 digs.

Munising, SC advance

At Eben on Monday, the Mustangs made the short drive to Superior Central worth it by coming back against Big Bay de Noc, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-11, in a Class D district tournament.

"We started slow when we struggled with our serve receive, but once we got going, the big crowd helped us keep our focus," Munising coach Myra Lloyd said.

Senior hitter Katie Immel made seven kills and four service aces, while junior Ciera Bradley and senior Jenna Hach each had five kills.

Host Superior Central prevailed 25-17, 25-11, 15-25, 25-18 over Rapid River as Mikayla Barrows had five kills, nine aces and five digs, while teammate Brooke Pasanen added nine aces and six digs.

The Mustangs return to Eben to face the tournament hosts for the district title at 7 p.m. Thursday.
