To the Journal editor:
Is there something in the water that is keeping U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek, R-Crystal. Falls, away from Marquette citizens who want the opportunity to talk and debate with their elected officials? There must be some good reason he refuses to meet with his constituents here.
The empty chair last week at the Upper Peninsula Children's Coalition said it all to me. Rep. Benishek really doesn't want to represent everyone in his district.
I know he probably has some excuse about scheduling in this instance, but that does not excuse his general absence in the Marquette area and his unwillingness to schedule townhall meetings anywhere in the U.P. office hours with staff and unannounced early morning breakfasts don't cut it.
Gary McDowell is not afraid to show up and debate and his history as a public servant is more in line with what we need in a representative.
The U.P. is sparsely populated and geographically daunting. To not show up to a forum that will be televised and replayed across the U.P. seems enough to disqualify a sitting representative. Rep. Benishek doesn't like career politicians. Let's not let him become one.
Vote for the candidate of the 99 percent. Vote for Gary McDowell.
