Squirt Sentinels prevail in Traverse City

MARQUETTE - Marquette's TriMedia Sentinels Squirt AA youth hockey team defeated five Detroit-area teams to capture the championship at the Traverse City Squirt AA Tournament during the weekend of Oct. 23-24.

On Saturday morning, the team doubled up the Southgate Senators, 6-3, backstopped by Preston Maki in goal. Jacob Peterson led Marquette scorers with a hat trick, while Braydon Stannard had two goals and an assist and Cooper Anderson the final goal.

Lucas Guertin notched two assists and defensemen Andrew Fedrizzi and Evan Kroll each had one.

In a win over Orchard Lake United later that morning, Maki and Carsen Hayes split duties in net as Peterson and Anderson each had hat tricks and Joseph Luke added a single goal. Stannard and Guertin had two assists apiece.

On Saturday afternoon, the Sentinels crushed the Grosse Ile Islanders, 9-2, with Carsen Hayes working between the pipes. Stannard led the way with five goals and an assist, while Anderson scored twice and Peterson and Guertin once each. Peterson also had a three-assist playmaker. Ethan Sellers had two assists, while Ryan McCoy was among those with an assist.

On Sunday morning, Marquette eased past the KV Rebels in overtime, 4-3 as Stannard scored all four goals for Marquette, including the OT game-winner with just seven seconds left in the extra period. Fedrizzi had a three-assist playmaker.

In the championship game later Sunday, Marquette got by the Trenton Blades, 7-4. Luke opened the scoring early with an assist going to Ansel Frost before Stannard added another hat trick to a stellar weekend. Peterson added two goals and an assist and Guertin also found the net. Maki worked in the Sentinels net for both games on Sunday.
