Conning tower being repainted

October 31, 2012
The Mining Journal

MARQUETTE - Volunteers with the McClintock Darter-Dace Committee recently moved the conning tower from Mattson Lower Harbor Park to St. Germain Sandblasting, where it will be sandblasted and painted over the winter.

The conning tower was dedicated in May of 2000 on the land where the Coast Guard station now stands. When construction of the station began, the tower was moved to a temporary location in Mattson Park. When the old Coast Guard property is transferred to the city, the tower will be permanently placed in the vicinity of the Maritime Museum. The maintenance project will cost about $8,500, and the committee will be soliciting funds to cover the cost.
