Lower gasoline prices good news for everyone

October 29, 2012
The Mining Journal

We are continuing to see a trend when it comes to the price of gas in the Marquette area and that trend is good news.

We continue to see that Marquette is lower than Escanaba, Houghton and Iron Mountain. We like this new trend. We now have people telling us they have taken trips and Marquette had the cheapest gas of any town or state along the route of their trip.

It used to be the opposite when people would tell us the price of gas in Marquette was the highest of any town or state. We are not sure why things have changed, but we are pleased to recognize the Marquette area gas stations for getting more competitive on gas prices.

We checked gas prices using gas buddy on Friday and we found that Escanaba was selling gas for $3.42 per gallon. Houghton was selling gas for $3.46 per gallon. Iron Mountain was selling gas for $3.40 per gallon. Marquette had at least one station selling gas for $3.38 per gallon.

We are also seeing a bit of a variance in the price of gas from one station to another. That is also a good sign. Maybe the stations are now charging for gas based on what they paid for the gas when the last tanker made a delivery.

That would make good sense to us instead of raising the price of gas by 20 cents a gallon in one day because of some stock market, weather or refinery related event.

We appreciate their efforts and we hope that this trend of being more competitive on gas continues. It will help the local economy to improve and in the long run that should mean more business for the local gas stations.
