Flag program a great way to honor veterans

October 26, 2012
The Mining Journal

Marquette American Legion Post 44 is looking for participants in a program that has already met with a good response.

The post is selling American flags that go on display at the Veterans Memorial Mall in Marquette's Harlow Park on certain days of the year.

These 3-foot by 5-foot flags that stand 8-feet tall include a special feature: a small plaque that can be dedicated to anyone. The plaques certainly can honor veterans and active military members, but they also can be a salute to a family member or an entire family.

The flags are being sold for $50 each, with proceeds going to the legion's continuing programs like Boys State.

On Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day, the flags are set up to line the sidewalks of the memorial mall and along Washington Street to pay tribute to our nation. The post calls that the Avenue of the Flags and it's stunning to view.

The display also includes on the mall's fountain the five flags representing the branches of the American armed forces.

It's a beautiful way for Marquette to show its patriotic pride and for individuals and families to salute those they love.

For more information, contact Pete Shelafoe, project chairman, at 226-9426 or the American Legion Post at 225-0781, mentioning Shelafoe's name and the flag project when leaving a message.

Those getting their purchases in by Nov. 4 will be included in the Veterans Day display Nov. 11.

We think it's a fine idea from a great community organization and we hope many in our area take part in this grand old display.
