To the Journal editor:
At the Democratic National Convention on Sept. 5, Sister Simone Campbell sent out an urgent reminder in response to the Paul Ryan budget plan, emphasizing the severe and profound impact this plan would have on struggling families.
Throughout the summer, Campbell led a group of Catholic nuns on a "Nuns on the Bus" tour that swept the nation as a consciousness-raising social justice movement.
How can one justify giving tax breaks to the wealthy while at the same time significantly cutting aid to the poor? I stand with Sister Simone and others who support what is fair, just and simply, the right thing to do.
There has to be a better way. Sister Simone's message is yet another warning clearly underscoring the dire importance of understanding the political candidates' views concerning issues such as budget reform, and that we all share responsibility in the outcome of how we cast our vote come November.
