NEGAUNEE - The Negaunee school board on Monday approved the hiring of a new assistant principal at Lakeview Elementary School.
Warren Potts will begin at Lakeview as assistant principal in November. He will also take over the student council adviser position.
"We're happy to have him on board and we think he's going to be a great asset to the school and the district," Superintendent James Derocher said.
Potts has a bachelor's degree in elementary education with a concentration in biology and a master's degree in school administration. Potts said he hopes to continue the great reputation that Lakeview has.
"I'm just really flabbergasted to be able to find this position open at this time of the year and to be given this opportunity," he said.
Potts has nine years of elementary teaching experience and has experience with assisting a principal at a school in North Carolina. He said one of the draws to Lakeview is that his wife is originally from Calumet and they have relatives in the area.
"We moved up here to be closer to family. We have nieces that go to Lakeview and with every year slipping by, they were getting older and we were missing out on that," Potts said. "We found an opportunity to move up here ... so when this position came open it was a miracle."
After being away from a school for a while, Potts said he's excited to get back to doing what he loves.
"I'm really looking forward to working with kids, working with (principal) Julie Peterson and supporting the staff," Potts said. "As well as being apart of that team and continuing the tradition of excellence."
Once Potts starts as assistant principal at Lakeview, current assistant principal Kellie Boase will become the full time special education coordinator for the district.
