To the Journal editor:
I, as well as many others, welcome the news that with the selling of Marquette General Hospital to Duke LifePoint Healthcare, the properties of MGH that were tax exempt are now being placed back on the tax rolls.
I believe approximately 54 percent of all the property in the city of Marquette is, or has been, tax exempt leaving the rest of the taxpayers to support the general fund and operations of the city.
I hope that our city commission, city manager and staff will now find meaningful ways to lower the tax burden on seniors especially, and many others living on fixed incomes so they can continue living in their homes they worked so hard for.
The savings would also help by giving individuals some extra spending power to purchase necessary items. Any plan that boosts the local economy and benefits the community is a win-win.
