Legion Bantams win consolation title

MARQUETTE - A 4-3 win over Ashburn, Va., enabled the Marquette American Legion Bantam AA hockey team to capture the Tier 2 consolation crown at the North American Elite AA Invitational in Detroit.

Coach Brian Nebel's icers overcame a 3-1 deficit heading into the third period, with Donnie Schultz scoring the team's goal in the second, assisted by Chris LeMire and Ben Cole.

Kristian Jackson (unassisted) and Nick Bink (Cole) notched goals to tie the score, then Jackson scored the game-winner at 9:18 of the final period. Schultz and Spencer DenBeste recorded assists.

Travis Cameron made 23 saves in net for Legion, while Liam Callahan came up with eight stops for Ashburn.

"While we were disappointed we couldn't play in the (Tier 1) semis, we're glad to finish the tournament with two big wins on (Oct. 7), especially being down 3-1 (to Ashburn) after the second period," said Nebel, whose team is now 8-2-1 overall this season.

"It was a good gut check for our kids and they responded nicely."

In a Tier II semifinal, Legion shaded the Toronto (Ontario, Canada) Wolverines, 2-1, behind goals by DenBeste and LeMire.

Drawing assists were Joey Phillips and DenBeste, while Marquette netminder Jack Eyler stopped 20 shots on net.

The previous game, Marquette lost to the Rochester (N.Y.) Grizzlies 4-1, with DenBeste notching the lone goal for Legion. Kyle Lane collected an assist.

Cameron came up with 27 saves.

Legion also beat the Motor City Machine 4-3, with Jackson notching the winning marker on a power play at 10:26 of the final period.

Jackson also scored another power play marker in the second period, with Alister Henderson and Brandon Campbell reaching the back of the net, as well, for Legion in the contest.

Justin Moyle, Shane Ring, DenBeste, Schultz, Ryan Morrissey and Bink picked up helpers.

Eyler made 25 stops in goal for Marquette.

The Legion skaters opened their portion of the tournament with a 2-2 tie with the Newmarket (Ontario, Canada) Redmen.

LeMire and Tristan Ashbrook had given Legion a 2-1 lead, but the Redmen scored at the 12:17 mark of the third period to gain a tie.

Ashbrook, Bink and LeMire collected assists.

Cameron recorded 17 saves for Marquette.
