GWINN - Pending board of education approval Monday, Ben Olsen has been hired as Gwinn High School's varsity girls basketball coach.

He replaces Brad Pfluger, who was asked by school district officials to resign in August after his 2011-12 squad went 5-15 overall.

Olsen has coached the GHS boys junior varsity team for two years.

GHS athletic director Rob Soyring said Wednesday Olsen was the only candidate for the position after the opening was posted internally.

"We knew we had a good candidate when he applied," Soyring said. "He's extremely organized, maximizes potential and conducts very structured practices. He also focuses on fundamentals.

"We're very pleased (with the selection)."

Soyring said Olsen, currently assisting GHS head varsity football coach Darren Sinnaeve, is an Iron Mountain High School graduate who attended Northern Michigan University

Olsen is an elementary physical education teacher at both the Gilbert and K.I. Sawyer schools in the Gwinn district, Soyring said.

Craig Remsburg can be reached at 906-228-2500, ext. 251.
