MARQUETTE - The Marquette Magic 17-Under team won two of its three games at the Battle of the Midwest Tournament held in Mount Pleasant on Saturday.
The Magic opened with a 50-26 win over GC Elite as Kaylie Engler of Ishpeming and Michele LaFave of Escanaba scored 11 points apiece, and Lydia Kurin of Marquette and Ashlyn Kero of Houghton added eight each.
The Lisa Coombs-Gerou-coached Magic employed a pressing defense that GC Elite couldn't break and shot 53 percent from the field, most coming off the transition.
Marquette fell to a tall ACB Hoops Club, 44-36, in game 2 as Engler and Elizabeth Kurin of Marquette both scored nine points and Lydia Kurin had eight.
The Magic finished with the event with a 55-35 victory over Michigan Roadrunners, committing just four turnovers all game. Engler scored 20 points and LaFave, Lydia Kurin and Tammy Simula of Ishpeming each had eight.
The Magic will next see action on Oct. 13 in Mount Pleasant.
