MARQUETTE - Eight United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters lifted personal records on Friday during the Upper Peninsula Weightlifting Championships.
Vanessa McCoy of Wichita Falls, Tex., took home the best female lifter award, lifting 78 kilograms in the snatch and a personal record of 105 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 183 kg in the 63-kg weight class.
Competing at 94 kg, John McGovern of Pensacola, Fla., received the best male lifter award for his 291 kg total. McGovern's personal records came with his 131 kg lift in the snatch and 160 kg lift in the clean and jerk.
Other male athletes lifting personal records were Ryan Borges of Bradenton, Fla., lifting at 69 kg with a total of 219 kg and Chris Young of downstate Oakland in the 85-kg weight class earning a total of 248 kg. Brennan Jaquint's personal best came in the 105-kg weight class with his 120 kg snatch. Jaquint was unable to clear his lift in the clean and jerk.
Three women also lifted personal records. Marquette's Holly O'Dovero competed at 53 kg, lifting a total of 126 kg. In the 58-kg weight class, Kendra Miller of downstate Plainwell totaled 142 kg and Bree Carlson of Peshtigo, Wis., cleared 139 kg.
