MARQUETTE - The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team opened its season with an intrasquad meet Saturday at the PEIF Pool. The Gold topped the Green 479-440.
"For the first outing, we looked pretty good," NMU coach Heidi Voigt said. "I could tell who worked hard this summer and preseason. We are faster right now than we were last year at this time."
Freshman Crystal Bennet led Gold with wins in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Emily Bourguignon won the 100 free and sophomore Tara Dowling won the 200 free. Sophomore Molly Kearney won both the one and three-meter dives.
For Green, sophomore Jordan Iverson took the 500 free, sophomore Debbi Lawrence won the 200 individual medley, sophomore Madisen Sechena won the 100 butterfly and senior Lauren Cockels took the 100 backstroke.
"Jordan Iverson and Tara Dowling stood out today," Voigt said. "It was good to see the freshmen race and Crystal Bennet, our sprinter from Australia, will be a great addition."
The Wildcats host Hillsdale College on Oct. 12-13 for their first official meet.
