NEGAUNEE - With the girls' prep tennis season winding down, the Westwood and Negaunee tennis teams got a chance to hone their skills Wednesday.
Winning three singles matches, Negaunee forged a 5-3 post-Mid-Peninsula Conference tournament win over the visiting Patriots to improve to 10-1-2 on the season. The Miners captured the M-PC title on Monday.
Westwood's Sarah Massie turned back Abbi Kill at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4, but the Miners' Allison Carlson at No. 2, Kayla Hakala at No. 3 and Dana DeBretto at No. 4 all won their matches in straight sets.
"Kayla at No. 3 has been a good senior leader and the girls wanted to hit that 10-win mark," Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari said.
"Westwood's solid and it was a nice match for both teams before the U.P.'s (next week)."
The two squads split the doubles matches, with all four flights going to a super tie-breaker.
Ashley Anderson and Mandi Grasso at No. 1, and Kylee Taavola and Jordyn LaFreniere at No. 3, won for Negaunee.
For Westwood, Taryn Moyle and Katie Rankinen at No. 2, and Shana Caliguri and Rachel Anderson at No. 4, claimed doubles triumphs for the Patriots.
