ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming Downtown Development Authority will be discussing some key projects around the city at its meeting Monday.

Bond project updates are on the agenda, including the Malton Road extension, a water extension to the north side of U.S. 41 and west of the IGA store and beautification of the entrances to city.

The Malton Road extension construction has already begun. When finished it will connect U.S. 41 to Business Route 28 between Ishpeming and Negaunee.

The beautification project is designed to make the entrances to the city nicer to look at, said DDA Chairman David Aeh. The entrances will include First Street, Second Street and Lakeshore Drive.

According City Manager Jered Ottenwess, the purpose of the water extension project that will be discussed is to make the property north of U.S. 41 and west of the IGA developable. It will also make the property south of U.S. 41 developable as well, Ottenwess said.

"Right now there is no water or sewage access to that part of the city," Ottenwess said.

The city has been negotiating with A. Lindberg &?Sons construction company on the project. The original estimate was for around $715,000, but the bid came in higher than expected, Ottenwess said. The city has to redesign the project, he said.

"We have a concept plan," Ottenwess said. "We need to continue to revise that plan and then finalize it."

Also on the agenda is a discussion of the empty lot on the corner of Main Street and Cleveland Avenue, also known as the Penney's lot. According to Aeh, the last action was to develop the lot into a public purpose area. At the meeting on Monday, new suggestions will be discussed as to what will could happen with the empty lot.

The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Monday in the City Hall conference room.
