To the Journal editor:
The "Letter to the Editor" service provided by The Mining Journal deserves our gratitude and respect, because it honors our First Amendment right to freedom of expression.
That gratitude and respect is not reflected in contributions which ignore the facts, or worse, flagrantly twist, misrepresent or deny the truth.
A recent letter begins by saying: "...I am very concerned that anyone would be allowed to throw accusations around in the press..." The writer then continues: " ... our congressman, U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek, R-Crystal Falls, voted to end Medicare (HCR 34, House vote 277) and make seniors pay more ..."
We should all be outraged if our member of Congress voted to end the medical insurance program upon which so many seniors (and I am one of them) depend. However, he did not.
Here is, verbatim, the key section of HCR 34 related to Medicare: "... It is the policy of this resolution to protect those in and near retirement from any disruptions to their Medicare benefits and offer future beneficiaries the same health care options available to Members of Congress ..."
Rep. Dan Benishek did not vote to end Medicare. He voted to protect current Medicare beneficiaries, while seeking a way to preserve benefits for seniors in the future.
